Teaching

As with the Writing section of this site, I'll be expanding this one going forward. What follows are short place-holder descritions of a few of my most formative teaching experiences.

Education in Black and White

A course in the history of race and education in the United States. Center for Worker Education, City College of New York. I taught this class for the first time in the fall of 2008, and it's already shaped my research and teaching interests in powerful ways. In particular, I'm now interested in learning a lot more about the ways in which the history of race and racism are taught in the classroom, particularly on the elementary and middle-school level.

The Shaping of the Modern World

The Western Civilization component of the Brooklyn College core curriculum. I taught this course as a Graduate Teaching Fellow on a three-year appointment, which gave me a rare opportunity to teach the same course in a variety of different ways. In addition to experimenting with various curricular and pedagogical approaches, I had the opportunity to each the class as, for instance, an evening course for returning students, an all-ESL course, and as part of a program for first-year students.
